Difference Between Campervans & Motorhomes New Zealand

To those outside the self-drive holiday industry, terms describing rental vehicles, such as campervans and motorhomes can often be confusing. Before booking your chosen vehicle, it’s important to be aware that there are some subtle differences between a Campervan and a Motorhome hire in NZ.

While many campervans include bathrooms and kitchens, they are typically more compact than the average motorhome and often contain more basic facilities. Motorhomes in NZ are larger 2 to 6 berth vehicles, generally built on a long-wheelbase and have more sophisticated features typically found in a home, whereas campervans usually refer to a smaller 2 to 3 berth vehicle.

There is generally no divide between the cab and the living quarters in a campervan, however, there is normally a divide between the cab and the living quarters in a motorhome rental in NZ.

So when it comes to choosing between a campervan or a motorhome, you need to consider how many people are travelling with you, how much storage space you require, what facilities you need, how long your trip is going to be and most importantly are you confident to drive a large vehicle!

Escape Rentals New Zealand

Escape Rentals has been operating for nearly 20 years and has served over 30,000 happy hires across the globe. This company not only supplies you with a brightly painted vehicle but also checks prices constantly against competitor prices to ensure hiring rates are lower and customers are getting great value for money. Escape Rentals also has simple paperwork that’s easy to understand and great insurance coverage, with no nasty surprises or hidden costs.

Escape provides customers with a self-contained campervan enabling them to experience the Freedom of Camping and Road tripping throughout New Zealand. Self-Contained Campervans have to go through a legal certification process requiring a multitude of additional features, including a portable or fixed toilet, a sink, a grey-water holding tank – and more.  All of these requirements mean that you will have a more comfortable and more flexible trip (there are heaps of public toilets available in New Zealand, but if you do find yourself ‘short’, you have your own toilet available at your disposal!)

Types of Escape Campervans

  • Escape Certified Self-Contained Campervans – These 3 berth 2008 – 2014 Nissan Caravans bridge the gap between expensive lumbering ‘motorhomes’ and your basic van or other vehicles that yes can get you around. Yes some motorhomes may have some cookers and other facilities… BUT do not give you the ultimate freedom of camping self-contained in an Escape self-contained campervan.
  • Standard Campervans Escape also have other 3 berth standard campervans that are a 2003 – 2008 Nissan Caravan. They range from have 190,000 to approx. 300,000 kilometres on the clock and are the cheaper option. PLEASE remember these do not have the portable toilets and are therefore not self contained.

Escape campers offer two pick-up and drop-off locations, including Auckland and Christchurch.

Why Choose Escape Campervans New Zealand?

They offer one way hires, can help with discounted ferry crossing and provide 24-hour roadside assistance. Bonus!!
