If there is one thing I kick myself on it was not signing up with frequent flyer companies earlier. If you can be trusted with a credit card the building of frequent flyer points becomes your best friend if you are looking to travel luxuriously for less.

Personally, we use the Velocity Frequent Flyer Program extensively here in Australia. However, we also have an account within Qantas’ Frequent Flyer Program too, however, we barely use it as we pool all our points straight into Velocity to maximise our points.

Other international Frequent Flyer Programs include:

  •  JetBlue Airways TrueBlue (USA)
  •  Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards (USA)
  • Delta Airlines SkyMiles (USA)
  • British Airways Executive Club (UK)
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (Singapore)
  • Emirates Skyward (UAE)
  • Plus Many More

Ever heard of a Repositioning Cruise? Fantastic Luxury Travel Hack they are. Not only are you experiencing places, enjoying the luxury of a cruise ship but also incorporating your travel all in one. If you leave from one place and some days later arrive at a new one without the cost of a flight you are certainly winning.

Another luxurious way of travelling is road tripping. Of course, this is on the proviso of a being in a great campervan, motorhome, caravan on RV.  For me this includes a fixed bed (one that does not need to be set up each and every day), access to power, even when off the grid, and ideally a toilet and shower. All these luxuries make road tripping a great and affordable way to travel.

An obvious hack, but one, people don’t utilise. If you have flexibility use it. These are our current tips for utilising flexibility to get more bang for our buck:

  • Check different dates
  • Check different locations
  • Check different airports and flights
  • Utilising stopovers & layovers
  • Utilising carry on luggage only

Spend some time checking out all of these options above to minimise costs. This could simply be looking at slightly different dates or locations. Otherwise if you love hunting for a deal check out different airport and flight options for departure or arrival. An example of this is check all airports in New York to see if there are cheaper options. You will be amazed how much you can save.

Also, incorporating a layover or stopover into your flexible travel is another great way of experiencing more.  We utilise the layover with every opportunity we get.

If you are interested in layovers the posts below are super helpful:

Another great way to save some extra money to put towards more luxurious travel is by flying with carry on luggage, also known as hand or cabin luggage, only. You can certainly be strategic and flexible with your packing to save you money.

It seems so simple but have you ever actually thought about it? Travel with one other person and you can split the cost of accommodation, car rental, etc. Travel in a larger group and the costs are split even further making travel cheaper and cheaper.

I have been fortunate to travel in the following scenarios:

  • As a couple with my amazing partner, Jarrad
  • With a friend
  • In a group
All the above scenarios have there pros and cons but as Christoper McCandless states “happiness is only real when shared”. So, share some happiness save some money.

Don’t simply book hotels. However, if you are planning to check out various sites, Booking.com is our favourite. But also, don’t forget those travel deal sites I mentioned above to get the best bang for your buck.

Have you ever utilised Airbnb. If you haven’t you are missing out. Imagine getting all the amenities of a hotel plus more. Well, that is what Airbnb offers. After spending 3 months travelling through South America on a group tour staying in an Airbnb in Rio de Janeiro was just what Jarrad I needed. But what was so good about this Airbnb? Simply it was the washing machine and kitchen. These creature comforts made it feel luxurious but also homely and just what we needed.
