A Guide To Airbnb - Orange County California

Orange County, California is a tourist hotspot, only 35 miles away from Los Angeles and home to Disneyland Resort (the original one!), Knotts Berry Farm and gorgeous beaches along 40 miles of coastline. Due to this tourist nature of Orange County, hotel prices can be very expensive, even for the basics, especially as you get closer and closer to Disneyland. Therefore, for a stay in this area, it makes complete sense to choose a luxury Airbnb. Orange County Airbnbs are often a fraction of the price of a Disneyland hotel room.

An Orange County Airbnb is like a home away from home. It gives you the freedom and luxury of feeling ‘at home’, with the chance to save money by buying in your own food and cooking (Airbnb dependent) and washing your own clothes. It’s a relaxed way to live in luxury at a budget price without the bland commercial feel of a hotel room. However, if Orange County is too far south of LA for you check out these best places to stay in Los Angeles

An Airbnb: Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach is a stunning location in Southern California. With 9.5 miles of sandy beaches, Mediterranean climate and year-round surf culture, what more could you want?

After an 850-mile road trip down the pacific coast of California, Huntington Beach seemed like the perfect place to relax for a few nights. There is plenty of residential areas in Orange County making it easy to find a nice Airbnb, Huntington Beach.

A beautiful sunset at Huntington Beach. An Airbnb Huntington Beach would be perfect to see this.

What To Look For When Choosing A Huntington Beach Airbnb

When choosing a Huntington Beach Airbnb, it was important to me that there was parking available on site. I had a hire car for the duration of my stay in Huntington Beach, it’s almost a necessity for Southern California (or just California in general) as good public transport routes are limited and everything is very very spread out. A local won’t think twice about driving 30 miles one way.

The Best Airbnb: Huntington Beach

The Huntington Beach Airbnb I chose was perfect! A beautiful, luxury house with an outside seating area, pool, hot tub and of course, off street parking!

Check In

On arrival to the property (after a very scary drive on the I-405 through Los Angeles) check in to the Airbnb was a breeze! The hosts had messaged me through the app to let me know both the code for the front door and code for my bedroom door and that was it, I was free to relax! I notified the hosts that I had arrived (again, through the app) and they proceeded to message me with lots of different things to do in the area which I found to be really useful and a nice touch!

Location

The Airbnb was in a quiet, residential area of Huntington Beach, very close to Westminster Mall and only a matter of miles away from the lively downtown area of Huntington Beach, otherwise known as Surf City USA.

The location of the Airbnb really was ideal, just down the road from a Target, which was great! I wasn’t allowed to cook in the property, but I could store food and drink in their fridge, make teas and coffees and use all kitchen appliances. To keep to a budget, I bought a box of cereal, milk and tea bags (typical Brit I know) for breakfast and snacks to keep me going throughout the day.

The Space

I had a private room and private bathroom in this Airbnb, the hosts lived in the house and they also had one other room to rent on Airbnb. At first it was strange, I was staying in a complete stranger’s home. I had barely any interaction in person with the hosts, but I knew they were only a message away if I needed them and extremely responsive which was reassuring.

This Airbnb in Huntington Beach was the ideal place to explore that everything Orange County has to offer! From the surf of Huntington Beach and art of Laguna Beach to the fun of Disneyland and thrills of Knotts Berry Farm.

An Airbnb: Disneyland

There is another great location in Orange County to find an Airbnb – Garden Grove. Garden Grove is further inland than Huntington Beach and is bordered by Anaheim. As you might already know, Anaheim is home to Disneyland Resort. This makes Garden Grove the ideal location to find an Airbnb for a somewhat budget Disneyland trip! (Let’s be honest, Disneyland isn’t cheap!)

The castle at Disneyland is magical. Getting a Disneyland Airbnb will allow easy access to Disneyland

When choosing a Disneyland Airbnb, location to Disneyland was extremely important to me! As the whole purpose of this trip to California was to visit Disneyland, I wasn’t planning on hiring a car. This meant that the Airbnb for Disneyland had to be either on a good public transport route or close enough that an Uber or Lyft was affordable and worked out cheaper than the $20 parking charge.

The Best Airbnb: Garden Grove

Unfortunately, this Airbnb is currently not available but check out some fantastic Garden Grove Airbnb’s HERE!

The Garden Grove Airbnb was exactly what I was looking for! A beautiful modern house, in a gated community just off the busy road of Katella Ave. The best part about this Airbnb was how close I was to Disneyland! Katella Ave runs directly in front of the Disneyland Resort, meaning I was only 3 miles and 10-minute drive (in a straight line) away from the park gates.

The house itself was gorgeous! A modern shared living area, with access to the kitchen (again, no cooking), an outside seating area, private double bedroom and shared bathroom next door to the room. The bedroom had the comfiest bed I’ve ever slept in – which was perfect for my jet lagged (and stressed) self to unwind and relax before my busy New Year celebrations at the Disneyland Resort.

Surrounding Areas: Things To Do

Life is certainly more relaxed in Orange County, there is less hustle and bustle than in Los Angeles and still hundreds of things to do and see! Looking to get off the beaten track? Check out these Orange County hidden gems.  However, if you are more interested in Los Angeles, check out 100+ things to do in LA.

Whale Watching, Orange County

Situated on the Pacific Ocean, Orange County is the ideal place to go out whale watching! There is plenty of companies dotted along the coastline which offer Whale Watching tours, I was lucky enough to see LOTS of Dolphins and a Whale on my tour departing from Newport Beach.

Relaxing On The Beach

Laguna Beach looking beautiful on a sunny day
Laguna Beach perfect for an Airbnb, Orange County.

If being out at sea isn’t your thing, then Orange County has 40 miles of coastline and gorgeous beaches for you to relax on. A personal favourite is the beaches at Laguna Beach, they’re beautiful and arguably my favourite place in Orange County. Just take a look at Heisler Park or embrace your inner Rapunzel at the pirate tower.

Shopping

Orange County is also an excellent place for shopping! South Coast Plaza is one of the largest shopping malls in the USA. With 250 stores ranging from department stores to upscale luxury, there is something to suit everyone’s budget! The Kardashians have even been spotted shopping here! Another great shopping location is The Irvine Spectrum Centre. There is something here for everyone! Lots of shops, bars, restaurants, a Ferris wheel and even an Ice-Skating rink over the Christmas period.

Theme Parks

Of course, a post about Orange County wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Disneyland. When staying in an Airbnb in Orange County, you’re only a matter of minutes away from Disneyland Resort! This is the perfect destination for children and adults alike, with two fun filled Disney parks full of characters, parades and thrill rides! For more thrill and screams, just down the road in Buena Park is Knott’s Berry Farm, home to some of the most fun and thrilling rides in the world.

Hollywood

Even after all of this, if you still want to spend time Hollywood, it’s close enough for a day trip! With train links from Anaheim to Union Station in LA, you’re not too far away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood when staying in an Orange County Airbnb.

Overall, if you’re looking for a gorgeous, luxury oceanside destination close to everything that Orange County has to offer, Airbnb is definitely the way forward and being so residential means the options are endless, something to suit every taste and every budget.
