ENGLAND

The Fallen Angel: Cornwall

Outside The Fallen Angel - England - Accommodation in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks

Folded into sub-tropical gardens, overlooking the fishing-boat village of Mousehole in Cornwall, is a romantic bolthole sinful enough to bring the Devil to his knees, The Fallen Angel. This split-level design masterpiece is as decadent on the inside as any couple could wish for: floor-to-ceiling views across the sea, a sand-blasted oak kitchen (where you can relax as two chefs cook for you), antiquities plucked from the foothills of the Himalayas, original works of art, and a 2-person bathtub that just might be the best in the UK.

My weekend stay a The Fallen Angel was so indulgent (long relaxing baths) and so sinful (large G&Ts in front of the log burner) that I left with my angel wings definitely broken. Isn’t being bad fun?

The Slaughters Manor House: Cotswolds

Outside Slaughters Manor - England - Accommodation in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks

With its beautiful countryside views, rickety honey coloured cottages and quaint little market towns, The Cotswolds is arguably one of the most romantic locations in England. There are certain places that amp that romanticism right up though and The Slaughters Manor House does just that. No, I haven’t gone mad and yes I am recommending a place with a super violent name for a romantic break.

A 17th century French style château, Slaughters Manor is the most wonderful boutique hotel nestled in the picturesque village of Lower Slaughter. Contrary to the popular expectation that lots of murder took place here, the name is actually a corrupted version of the surname of a knight who was gifted the land, Philip de Sloitre.

Overlooking the little River Eye that winds its way through the village, Slaughters Manor is set in five acres of beautiful gardens, including a dovecote, perfect for having a romantic stroll through. Inside, the décor is stylish while still remaining true to its country roots; snuggle up in one of their deep leather sofas next to one of the roaring fires with a hot chocolate.

Each of their nineteen rooms have a different character; some have roll top baths, others have exposed beams or four poster beds with steps up to them for the ultimate princess and the pea moment (the aptly named room, Valentine, has them all).

Enjoy a cocktail at their stunningly curved gilt bar, before dining in their orangery style, triple-A rosette restaurant with beautiful views overlooking the gardens. The food here is indeed excellent; you can choose to dine à la carte, or for a truly blissful evening, opt for their seven course tasting menu with accompanying wine flight.

I am so in love with Slaughters Manor, I even got married here and you can read my full review of one of my numerous stays there here.

Bovey Castle: Dartmoor National Park

Outside of Bovey Castle - England - Luxury Holidays in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks

When it comes to the perfect romantic getaway, look no further than the luxurious Bovey Castle. Set in the breathtaking Dartmoor National Park in the heart of Devon – England – this 275 acre estate is truly a place you can escape from the world. Bovey Castle is one of those hotels that wows you from the minute you set eyes on it as you drive down the long drive towards it, and it doesn’t end there. It delivers on stateliness and glamour, with its massive stone fireplaces which roar away in the colder months, sweeping mahogany staircases, oak paneling, chandeliers, mullioned windows, plush sofas.

You will feel like royalty for the weekend. Bovey Castle boasts an award winning spa where you can unwind with an array of rejuvenating spa treatments, from a classic massage or facial to aromatherapy or reflexology treatments. You can indulge in a swim in the indoor pool before treating yourself to dinner in the 3 AA Rosette Great Western restaurant which is nothing short of superb. Nothing is left wanting in the attention to detail through out service and the food is all cooked to perfection. Using seasonal produce, the restaurant serves dishes using classic ingredients with a modern twist.

If you want a truly magical weekend with your loved one, book yourself into one of their suites, they are utterly devine! Complete with lounge, dining area, roll top bath, separate shower and bathroom. Did I mention, views from your room for miles out over Dartmoor? These are particularly beautiful first thing on a cold morning when fog has settled in the valley surrounding the castle. A suite will be the icing on an already delectable cake!

Shepherd's Hut, Taunton

Outside Shepard's Hut - England - Accommodation in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks

When my partner surprised me with a super romantic stay in a log cabin, it had everything we needed for a cosy night’s accommodation for just the two of us. This quaint log cabin is found in the West of England in a town called Taunton. It’s easy to find following a Sat Nav but you will need to drive here. It is part of an Equestrian Centre and owned by the farmer so while staying you can see the horses and animals. On arrival, you’re greeted by the horse stables and a large house but your accommodation is named The Shepherd’s Hut and can be seen at the end of a grassland area on its own, surrounded by majestic trees and a trickling brook.

The isolation of this accommodation adds to the romance. You don’t even need to check in because you’re given a combination after booking to locate the cabin key so you have complete privacy. After walking the stoned path, you arrive at your quarters for the night. It’s a gorgeous, small, wooden cabin perfect for a couple on Valentine’s Day because it’s so cosy.

Inside the cabin, there’s everything you want for your romantic stay including a small kitchen so you can bring your own food and beverages, a comfortable bed and television, board games and a scenic view looking over the stream and fields. Included in the stay is a small outside area of benches and a pit to make a small fire for both of you to sit around and relax amongst the solitude. Super romantic! I’d advise taking some marshmallows and hot chocolate to enjoy around the fire.

If you want to know more about the accommodation, read my full review on the cabin here.

FRANCE

Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace; Versailles

If you’re looking to complement your romantic visit to the City of Love then Versailles guarantees a wonderful experience. The fairytale castle with its enchanting gardens are a treat to the eye. A visit to such a royal destination calls for a palatial stay and that’s exactly what the Trianon Palace Versailles, a Waldorf Astoria hotel, is all about.

Its immaculate grounds are located right next to the Queen’s Gate entrance of the domain of Versailles. This luxury hotel breathes romance from the moment you walk in. The elegant rooms and even the bathrooms are equipped with quintessentially French windows and the balconies offer a view of the Palace of Versailles.

Breakfast and dinner are served in the La Véranda by Gordon Ramsey restaurant with its high ceilings, elegant chandeliers and large windows. Take a dip in the Grecian-inspired heated indoor pool, which bathes in light, before indulging in a high tea at the Bar Galerie, which gives out to the manicured garden dotted with colourful flower beds. The dreamy setting of a visit to Versailles calls for a picnic and the hotel’s cute picnic bike service guarantees a fun-filled afternoon.

The Trianon Palace Versailles is even a worthy alternative to a Parisian hotel, thanks to the complementary shuttle to the Arc de Triomphe in the heart of Paris. Enjoy the best of both worlds before spending a romantic night in your royal retreat.”

Château de Villiers-le-Mahieu: Villiers-le-Mahieu

Chateau de Villiers Side View - France - Luxury Holidays in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks

Chateau de Villiers is one of the most beautiful castles near Paris. It is located 50 km west of the French capital, in the town of Villiers-le-Mahieu. This chateau-hotel in France is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway, far from the hustle and bustle of the big city and surrounded by beautiful nature.

The castle is a mix of different styles, still surrounded by the moat that protected the 13-century castle in medieval times. During the last years, some extensions were added to host additional facilities for the comfort of guests like the restaurant, the fitness room or the spa.

Today guests can go from the castle to the other pavilions on the bikes provided by the hotel which are also perfect to explore the gardens and forest that surround the chateau. Other facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, ping pong tables, pétanque, and other games and external golf facilities nearby.

Chateau de Villiers le Mahieu has different kinds of rooms depending on their location. Rooms located in the main building are decorated in a classical style, being the rooms in the round towers particularly cute. Rooms in the pavillions, instead, are decorated in a contemporary style.

We really recommend Chateau de Villiers-le-Mahieu for your next romantic getaway in France. There are no easy public transportation options to reach the castle but you can ask the staff to arrange private transportation for you when you book your stay.

ITALY

Masseria Torre Coccaro: Puglia

Outside Masseria Torre Coccaro - Italy - Accommodation in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks

There is nothing quite like spending Valentine’s Day at a super romantic hotel nestled in the enchanting countryside of one of the world’s prettiest countries: Italy. Situated in the sunny region of Puglia in Italy’s Deep South, Masseria Torre Coccaro is an utterly romantic accommodation for Valentine’s Day and one of the most gorgeous places to stay in Puglia.

Surrounded by ancient olive trees and sun-kissed for the most part of the year, Masseria Torre Coccaro is a centuries-old estate now turned into a 5-star farm stay which combines tradition and luxury in the best possible way. Rooms are incredibly romantic, decorated as they are in white and light grey and furnished with exquisite pieces of furniture that breathe an inescapable air of nostalgia.

Furthermore, the hotel features an elegant restaurant where happy couples can enjoy a unique candlelit dinner while indulging in mouthwatering dishes prepared only with the best local ingredients and washed down with superb varieties of Italian wine. Masseria Torre Coccaro is also home to spa facilities and a dreamy indoor pool which is ideal for endless moments of relaxation.

By far the most romantic part of Masseria Torre Coccaro, though, is the estate’s large central courtyard. A stroll around this magical place on a starlit night is all it takes to be inspired to propose to one’s loved one and, why not, take a vow to be back for the wedding ceremony itself as well.

Locanda Palazzone: Orvieto, Umbria

Pool Locanda Palazzone - Italy - Accommodation in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks

Locanda Palazzone is a small luxury hotel located just outside the city of Orvieto in Umbria. The hotel’s medieval exterior belie the contemporary, minimalist feel within. With just seven suites, this is a peaceful retreat for couples looking for a stylish and romantic base in Italy.

The suites overlook the hotel’s vineyards and the sparkling lights of the surrounding valley. Orvieto, just 10 minutes’ drive away is also visible with its striking cathedral commanding a hilltop position.

The hotel takes its cuisine very seriously: local food is paired with the Locanda’s own wines. Tastings can be arranged, the wine is well known both in Italy and internationally. Dining on the hotel’s terrace is the perfect place for a romantic meal.

The hotel grounds are filled with fragrant roses and lavender which overlook the vineyards stretching across the valley. Days can be spent by the secluded tranquil swimming pool or exploring some of the hidden gems of Umbria.

Umbria, with its many romantic hilltop towns and beautiful art cities is easy to explore from the Locanda Palazzone. Perugia, Assisi and the smaller towns of Todi and Montefalco are all within day trip distance. Umbria is without doubt one of the most romantic regions of Italy and the Locanda is the perfect hotel from which to explore it.

Ego Boutique Hotel The Silk Road: Venice

Room Ego Boutique Hotel The Silk Road - Italy - Accommodation in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks
Imagine looking out of your suite’s window, enjoying the view of the historical palaces along the Grand Canal. The Rialto Bridge is just steps away. And behind you, your wife’s calling you from the jacuzzi… Wearing a soft signature bathrobe and still holding your glass of sparkling wine, you walk over to join her in the double bathtub. You’re in Venice, one of the most romantic cities of Europe. And this is the Ego Boutique Hotel The Silk Road

Located right in front of a water taxi station and just 500 meters away from St Mark Square, this boutique hotel is the perfect place to stay in Venice if you’re looking for luxury, splendour and elegance. Opened in November 2019, this is a brand new hotel with only 8 prestigious suites and romantic rooms inside the historical Palazzo Bembo.

We’re so glad to have discovered this little gem in Venice right when it opened, and to be among the first guests of this family-run hotel. Upon our arrival, we were welcomed cordially by the owner of the hotel, who led us to our Imperial Suite and showed us all the details herself.

We loved the comfortable king-size bed facing a breathtaking view of Venice, the jacuzzi, and the spotless bathroom with walk-in showers and luxurious amenities. But we were also very impressed by their breakfast, which includes the best Italian coffees and a large selection of fresh and tasty food served in a cozy and sumptuous room with views of the Grand Canal. And if you’re like us and need to drink your first coffee of the day in bed, then know that each room offers a coffee machine, an Nespresso machine and also a kettle, as well as many types of tea and coffee.

Decorated with lots of taste, combining Venetian’s timeless elegance and the spirit of a mysterious Ancient China, the Ego Boutique Hotel The Silk Road truly excels in everything! And for us, it is the most romantic hotel we’ve ever stayed in!

THE NETHERLANDS

Hotel Ambassade: Amsterdam

Outside Hotel Ambassade Amsterdam - The Netherlands - Luxury Holidays in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks
Even though we’re residents of Amsterdam, that doesn’t mean we don’t want to check out the best luxury hotels the city has to offer for a romantic stay, and so when my partner and I had the opportunity to spend a night away just the two of us 18 months after our first son was born, we got busy looking up the most romantic and luxurious hotels. Hotel Ambassade topped our list as one of the best hotels in Amsterdam so we booked a special romantic dinner and breakfast offer as we’d also heard good things about their Restaurant Brasserie.

Spoiler alert: We were not disappointed! Situated on a surprisingly quiet stretch of one of Amsterdam’s most famous canals, the Herengracht, Hotel Ambassade has a very boutique hotel feel thanks to the way it occupies a number of adjoined canal houses, making the corridors a bit maze-like, and quite cosy. It had a very intimate, personal feel but with the brilliantly professional service you can enjoy at a much bigger, 5-star enterprise.

There was also a pleasant surprise to discover; the hotel has something of a literary connection, as it’s often publishing companies’ first choice when booking their authors a place to stay on book tours. This meant there was a lobby bar lined with book shelves featuring the works of countless famous authors – I’ll let you maybe one day go there and discover if your favourite is there!

But back to the hotel. Our room was right in the top of one of the canal houses, in the gabled roof attic which is quite a unique and romantic way to stay in Amsterdam. The room was small but not pokey, and the bathroom was more than big enough. We also had a canal view which felt very luxurious.

While we slept fantastically that night – my first night of 8+ hours sleep in nearly two years – the real highlight was our romantic dinner at the Brasserie restaurant. We got very lucky and had a table right in the window overlooking the canal.

With the famous Amsterdam Light Festival just kicking off that season, we had the perfect view of one of the light installations and of the tour boats slowly cruising by admiring it. The food was delicious and the service impeccable. It was one of the most romantic and special dinners my partner and I have had in Amsterdam and we plan to go back for Valentine’s Day this year. Our breakfast the following morning was also just right – a combination of buffet offerings and a la carte menu. It was in a different restaurant bu there were still some views of the canal water flowing by outside to enjoy.

While our stay didn’t fall on Valentine’s Day, our romantic stay at Hotel Ambassade felt as good as Valentine’s Day, Christmas and our birthdays all rolled into one; not just because we got our first night of decent sleep in months, but because we were spoiled rotten by the staff, and got to enjoy a cosy and romantic night in the gables of one of Amsterdam’s famous canal houses.

SPAIN

Cabanas do Barranco: Galicia

Glamping in Galicia - Spain - Luxury Holidays in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks
If you ask me, it does not get much more romantic than glamping in the wilderness. That’s why today I would like to talk to you about Cabanas do Barranco, some tree houses in Serra de Outes, Galicia, Spain; where I had the opportunity to spend a February night a few years ago.
In addition to respecting the environment and the trees of the forest where they are located, employing local people for their design, construction, and management, do not be too expensive (it is already known that sometimes the glamping label raises prices a barbarity) for who want to enjoy it with their partner one or two nights, have all the comforts you can imagine (such as an indoor or outdoor hot tub, private terrace, wifi for those who do not like to disconnect and breakfast of local and homemade products at the door ); They are so beautiful that if you are like me (passionate about photography), you are in danger of spending more time than you think.
If you are looking for a special plan with your partner, check out the review we did after enjoying this unique glamping in Galicia.

Hotel Nord 1901 Superior: Girona

Pool at Hotel Nord 1901 - Spain - Luxury Holidays in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks

Hotel Nord 1901 Superior is in Girona, about an hour or so north of Barcelona in Spain.  The hotel is situated just a couple of minutes walk from Girona’s fantastic old town, and I loved our stay here. The hotel is a gorgeous old town house that’s been converted into an intimate, stylish four star hotel. There are only 18 bedrooms, so it’s quiet and has an exclusive feel.

My favourite thing about the hotel is the fact you’re so close to the old town, which is a maze of ancient, winding streets harbouring fantastic restaurants and bars. The whole location is very romantic. You might think it’s better to be in the old town itself, but one of the advantages of being just outside is that you can drive to the hotel and there’s parking just around the corner. There’s also a touch more space than right in the old town, and this means you get things like the hotel’s well-designed garden complete with swimming pool that’s perfect for cooling off in.

The decor of the hotel is all muted tones, dark wood and moody lighting, so it feels calm and relaxing. The hotel is family-run and we found the service to be friendly and helpful. There is a bar service in the evening and, while there’s no restaurant, there’s really no need for one given the proximity to Girona’s old town. We enjoyed a great breakfast at the hotel and would definitely return for another romantic getaway!

Bohemia Suites & Spa Hotel: Gran Canaria

Room Bohemia Suites & Spa Gran Canaria - Spain - Luxury Holidays in Europe - Luxury Travel Hacks

If you are looking for the most romantic accommodation for Valentine’s Day, then there is no place better than the luxurious Bohemia Suites & Spa Hotel. One of the main memorable features of this hotel was that it is an adult-only five-star hotel, located on the island of Gran Canaria. Gran Canaria is one of the beautiful Canary Islands, located just off the north western coast of Africa.

The hotel offers stunning ocean view suites with modern facilities. On premises, you’ll find a beautiful garden, pools and a jacuzzi. Nevertheless, the Asian style spa wins over every couple. The spa offers a unique experience and opportunity to relax, hence it’s an excellent place for a couple to pamper each other and enjoy each other’s company.

What’s more, the hotel can organize any type of excursion for customers. However complex the request, they will happily accommodate customers with tailored excursions. Some of their excursions include cooking classes, fishing trips, whale & dolphin watching, buggy tours, helicopter rides and plenty of other romantic activities. The infamous Maspalomas sand dunes are just a short walk away, which is fabulously known for its romantic walks in the sunset.

All in all, Bohemia Suites and Spa Hotel offers the best romantic experiences. It’s the perfect couples getaway. To learn more about what to do in Gran Canaria and the hotel, click here
